ANAGNORISIS Returns After a Decade of Silence With "Caregriever"
Silence Finally Speaks
Louisville, Kentucky-based black metal band ANAGNORISIS is breaking nearly a decade of silence with its fourth studio album, "Caregriever." Due out October 23, the album's first single, 'Nothing Left To Give,' is also now available across digital platforms.
ANAGNORISIS' return is the continuation of a deeply personal process that unfolded after the band's first chapter came to an end in 2016. In 2023, vocalist and guitarist Zachary Kerr began developing a solo project called Caregriever as a way of channeling the physical and emotional exhaustion he experienced while caring full-time for his terminally ill father-in-law.
The project soon grew beyond the confines of a solo endeavor and became the foundation for ANAGNORISIS' new album. The material took shape after Kerr's longtime creative partner and guitarist Zak Denham joined the project, and was subsequently shared with bassist Josh Mumford and drummer Cody McCoy. The band's core lineup was thus reunited, and recording sessions for "Caregriever" began in the summer of 2024.
At the heart of the album is the psychological burden of watching a loved one deteriorate over five years and eventually die. ANAGNORISIS focuses not only on death itself, but on the fact that loss can begin years before someone is actually gone. Grief, anger, guilt, depression, isolation, and exhaustion—all conflicting emotions—form the foundation of the album's narrative.
The title "Caregriever" directly reflects this approach. The album explores the point at which the responsibility of caregiving and the process of grieving become inseparable, portraying a period in which grief begins before the loss itself and devotion, resentment, hope, and despair can all coexist.
These personal themes are also reflected in the band's musical approach. ANAGNORISIS largely leaves behind the symphonic scope that defined its previous albums, taking its post-black metal foundation toward a darker, more direct, and more focused sound. Industrial music and punk influences are also woven into the new material, complementing the tension and emotional weight at the core of the album.
The album's first single, 'Nothing Left To Give,' addresses the common ground between two very different forms of loss. Zachary Kerr explains that the song contrasts the suddenness of losing his father with the years-long farewell that unfolded throughout his father-in-law's illness. Although the two experiences played out in very different ways, Kerr says, they ultimately left behind similar questions.
"Caregriever" was produced and recorded by Zak Denham and Zachary Kerr. Drums and bass were recorded at Top Track Studios, while Denham handled the mixing and mastering. The album also features backing vocals by Josh Mumford, vocal and lyrical contributions from Niels Riethorst on 'Death Of Man,' and samples by James E. Kerr. The cover artwork was created by August Friedrich Schenck and Charles Maurand.
"Caregriever" represents more than ANAGNORISIS' return after a lengthy absence; it also marks a new musical direction for the personal and introspective themes the band has explored for years. The album will be released on October 23, with Bölverk Collective handling the US CD pressing, the band's own Negative Reflections handling the US LP pressing, and Vendetta Records releasing the CD and LP editions in Europe.
Preorders and digital presaves for the album are now available. ANAGNORISIS has also teamed up with Waste Management Booking and will bring the "Caregriever" era to the stage, returning to live performance this year.
