German atmospheric black metal band BONJOUR TRISTESSE have unveiled the title track from their fifth album, “Disaster Triumphant”, due out on November 20 via AOP Records. The album’s conceptual framework draws on Max Horkheimer and Theodor W. Adorno’s critique of modern civilisation.

The vision behind “Disaster Triumphant” was shaped by the band’s founder Nathanael (HERETOIR), who drew inspiration from the philosophers’ work Dialectic of Enlightenment. Horkheimer and Adorno challenged the notion that the Enlightenment’s promise of liberating humanity from superstition and religious authority had brought genuine freedom, arguing that technological progress and industrial civilisation had instead created new forms of domination. The belief in humanity’s supremacy over nature and the consequences of mass society also inform the album’s conceptual background.

BONJOUR TRISTESSE carry this contradiction beyond the album’s title. The cover artwork by Abismo Black Arts also reflects the tension between the promises of Enlightenment and the destructive consequences of modern civilisation. Alongside a critique of a civilisation that destroys nature and devalues life, the lyrics explore loss, grief, melancholy and interpersonal emotions. The desire to withdraw from a world sinking ever deeper into chaos is another recurring theme.

Rooting their atmospheric black metal in contempt for industrial civilisation, grief over the planet’s future and reverence for the natural world, BONJOUR TRISTESSE had previously released ‘Tomb of Hope’ from the album. Clocking in at 12 minutes and 20 seconds, the newly unveiled ‘Disaster Triumphant’ is the longest track on the five-song record.

“Disaster Triumphant” is set for international release on November 20. The tracklist is as follows:

  1. The Heights of Despair

  2. At the Mountains of Silence

  3. Tomb of Hope

  4. Lingering in the Twilight of Shadows

  5. Disaster Triumphant
