“Avernus” Countdown Has Begun
New Album “Avernus”
Finnish extreme metal project Chamber of Unlight returns with its second studio album Avernus. The international release date for the album, which will arrive via Werewolf Records, has been announced as July 31. The release will be available on CD, vinyl, and cassette formats.
Formed in 2016 as the solo vision of multi-instrumentalist Necrosis, the project quickly evolved into a structure that brought together key figures from Finland’s underground extreme metal scene. Necrosis has previously been involved with projects such as Deathchain, Ajattara, and Shade Empire; their debut album Realm of the Night (2021) stood out as a launching point that fused modern production with the aesthetic of 1990s Finnish black metal.
Following that release, the lineup was expanded, and both the live and studio configuration took on a more collective form. With the addition of LRH on drums, Leper on guitar, VnoM on bass, Spellgoth on keyboards, and Infection on guitar, the band effectively became a “gathering of elites” from Finland’s underground scene.
The new album Avernus marks the first studio recording from this expanded lineup. While the band retains its core aggressive approach, it presents a clear evolution in both production and atmosphere. In particular, Spellgoth’s synth textures are brought to the forefront, reshaping the dark framework into something colder, more cosmic, and icily atmospheric. The relentless flow of riffs and melodic guitar lines lays the foundation for an epic yet controlled sense of darkness throughout the record.
On the production side, a more polished yet still organic approach stands out. The sound design carries both a tangible weight and a refined clarity, expanding the album’s overall atmosphere into a broader, more cinematic space. References to the unforgettable black metal records of the ’90s remain strongly present, resonating throughout the release.
Tracks previously unveiled from the album, “The Dagger” and “Night Chasm,” are available on the band’s YouTube channel, while the tracklist for Avernus has also been revealed as follows:

One With the One
Wraithlike
Night Chasm
Polkuni
The Dagger
Rise Above
Where Light Does Not Dare to Enter
Dominus Tenebrarum
Avernus is shaping up to be the most expansive and atmospheric work to date from Chamber of Unlight.
