DANHEIM, the Nordic folk project of Danish musician and producer Reidar Schæfer Olsen, has released its new single ‘Urblod’ via Season of Mist. Dedicated to the Jötnar, the giants and primordial beings of Norse mythology, the track revisits the mythological storytelling of DANHEIM’s earlier work, focusing on the world that existed before the gods.

‘Urblod’ draws inspiration from figures associated with creation, ancient ancestry and the untamed forces of nature in Norse mythology. Invoking Ymir, Bergelmir, Þrúðgelmir, Bölþorn, Bestla and Hræsvelgr, the track channels DANHEIM’s established musical approach of ritualistic vocals, percussion and ambient textures into this mythological framework.

Olsen emphasises that he does not view the Jötnar merely as enemies of the gods or as monsters. In his view, these beings represent primordial forces older than the gods themselves, embodying the untamed world from which everything else emerged. Through this perspective, ‘Urblod’ reaches back into the more ancient layers of Norse mythology.

The new single follows “Heimferd”, DANHEIM’s first album released through Season of Mist. Released on 31 October 2025 on CD, vinyl and digital formats, the 13-track album was the project’s first full-length in four years. While “Heimferd” continued DANHEIM’s blend of pounding percussion and minimalist ambient passages, it did not follow a specific mythological narrative. Olsen instead described it as a personal work shaped by mood and instinct, connected to the idea of returning to one’s ancestors and roots. Following that approach, ‘Urblod’ brings mythological storytelling back to the forefront.

DANHEIM is the Nordic folk and Viking Age-inspired project of Copenhagen-based Reidar Schæfer Olsen. His music draws on dark melodies, Norse mythology and old Danish folklore, shaped by his experience in electronic and ambient music.

‘Urblod’ runs for 3 minutes and 20 seconds. Listen to the single here.
