DECEPTOR Reignites 1988–1992 Deathrash on Its Debut Album
DECEPTOR Ignites Deathrash Fire
North Carolina-based DECEPTOR reaches straight back to one of deathrash’s most ferocious eras with its debut full-length, "Reign of Terror." Comprising ten tracks, the album not only recreates the spirit of that period, according to the band, but brings its old-school approach into the present through a production that is raw yet controlled.

The Raleigh-based trio has made the full album available to stream today via Decibel. "Reign of Terror" is set for international release on August 21 through Dying Victims Productions.
The era underpinning DECEPTOR’s musical identity is unmistakable. Old SEPULTURA, WHIPLASH, and PROTECTOR fuel the band’s thrashier side, while VIOGRESSION, RIPPING CORPSE, and early GORGUTS shape its more deathly edge. CORONER sits squarely at the intersection of these two sides. The result is a dynamic deathrash attack in which speed remains front and center, shifting through different gears from galloping rhythms and blast beats to full-throttle transitions.
At the heart of this approach are guitarist Preston Lanier’s riffs. Alongside guitar work that moves from blunt and aggressive structures to technical passages, Lanier raises the tension throughout the album with a succession of solos. Gabriel Earley’s bass adds considerable weight, particularly during the band’s heavier passages, while drummer Andrew Harper’s performance keeps the trio’s high-speed attack constantly moving forward.
One of the most striking aspects of "Reign of Terror" is the way this old-school sensibility extends beyond the songwriting and into the production. Vocalist and bassist Gabriel Earley, who also handled the album’s production, mixing, and mastering, places the recordings in a sonic environment that feels raw enough to have emerged from the past while remaining controlled enough to preserve its detail. Earley’s death growls complete the approach.
The foundations of DECEPTOR’s current incarnation were laid several years ago. Earley began the band in his bedroom, inspired by the stories of groups such as ANTHRAX and METALLICA getting their start with the support of Jon Zazula. Guitarist Preston Lanier joined the lineup in June 2022 after Earley approached him at an EXODUS show and handed him a copy of DECEPTOR’s first demo, "Bound by Ritual." Drummer Andrew Harper became part of the trio later that October after seeing the band perform at a DIY house show.
The lineup released the "Bathed in Blood" EP in 2023. A year later, the digital single 'Street General' marked the next step toward the band’s debut album. Now, "Reign of Terror" brings that preparatory period together across ten tracks and approximately 33 minutes.
The album features 'Red Dawn', 'Human Cavity', 'GI Joe Headstomp', 'Join or Die', 'Combat Patrol', 'Firing Squad', 'Whammer', 'Fog of War', 'Street General', and 'Corpse Corps'.
"Reign of Terror" will be released through Dying Victims Productions on August 21. The full album is available to stream via Decibel ahead of its release.
