The death/thrash trio Deceptor, emerging from North Carolina, USA, are preparing to make a truly devastating entrance onto the scene with their long-awaited debut album Reign of Terror. The record will be released on August 21 via Dying Victims Productions in vinyl and CD formats. Meanwhile, the band has also unveiled the new track “Whammer” through Deaf Forever.

Hailing from Raleigh, Deceptor operate with an approach firmly rooted in the classic underground death/thrash aesthetic of 1988–1992. At the core of the band stands Gabriel Earley, who handles vocals and bass guitar. Earley is also responsible for all compositions, lyrics, and a large portion of the production process. Having begun his musical journey in his own bedroom, the musician stepped into bringing Deceptor to life inspired by Jon Zazula’s role in the rise of bands such as Metallica and Anthrax.

Guitarist Preston Lanier joined the lineup in the summer of 2022 after meeting Earley at an Exodus show and hearing the band’s first demo recording Bound by Ritual. In the autumn of the same year, drummer Andrew Harper came on board after witnessing the band perform at a DIY event. This formation was carried further with the 2023 release of the Bathed in Blood EP, followed by the digital single “Street General.”

The new album Reign of Terror transforms the band’s entire accumulated output into a 33-minute, 10-track concentrated assault. A wide spectrum of influences—from the early aggression of Sepultura to the raw thrash spirit of Whiplash and Protector, the darker death metal edge of Viogression and Ripping Corpse, and the technical approach of Coroner—forms the DNA of the record. The tempo is in constant flux; at times it erupts into uncontrollable speed, while at others a restrained sense of tension comes to the forefront.

Lanier’s guitar work carries both primal savagery and technical sharpness, while the solos generate a pulse-raising wave of chaos. Earley’s bass parts further intensify the dark weight of the compositions, and Harper’s drumming lays down the backbone of this high-velocity assault. The album’s production maintains an old-school feel without sacrificing modern clarity; a dirty yet controlled sonic aesthetic stands out.
