Finnish black metal band FLAME have released their new track ‘Spellfire’ ahead of their third studio album, “Ignis Draconis Daemonicus.” The album is set for international release on September 25 via Primitive Reaction. ‘Spellfire’ is the second track to be unveiled from the record.

Based in Kuopio, FLAME were formed in 1998 by musicians who had previously been members of BARATHRUM and URN. The band established their approach with their debut album, “Into the Age of Fire,” bringing together blackthrash and bestial metal influences, and continued along the same path with 2005’s “March Into Firelands.” After a long period of silence, the band returned in 2020 with the “Ignis Spiritus” mini-album, released by Primitive Reaction. They are now set to return with a new full-length that carries forward elements of that release.

Musically, “Ignis Draconis Daemonicus” brings together the dark and aggressive character of FLAME’s first two albums with the atmospheric elements that became more pronounced on “Ignis Spiritus.” The album’s Latin title translates as “Fire of the Demonic Dragon,” while the lyrics by founding member Blackvenom expand on this concept through the idea of discovering one’s “true will,” inner power, and magickal transformation.

This shift is also reflected in the band’s lyrical approach. The blasphemy-centered themes of FLAME’s early period have given way to occult and esoteric texts drawing from Thelema, Typhonian and Draconian traditions, Chaos Magick, and Luciferian philosophies. Blackvenom states that the spiritual awakening and personal transformation he experienced around a decade ago form the foundation of this new lyrical direction.

Another notable aspect of the album is its production. After the recordings were completed by Chris Nunravager at his Rat Nest Recording studio, “Ignis Draconis Daemonicus” was mixed and mastered by Greg Chandler of ESOTERIC. Blackvenom says the band were particularly impressed by the sound of Adorior’s “Bleed on My Teeth,” recorded at Priory Recording Studios, which led them to seek out Chandler for the mixing process.

According to Blackvenom, the goal was to achieve FLAME’s strongest, heaviest, and most dynamic sound to date. He adds that Chandler’s work brought together heaviness, rawness, and epic atmospheres while preserving the band’s underground character.

At 47 minutes, “Ignis Draconis Daemonicus” features 10 tracks, including an introductory piece. Following the previously released ‘Kaosphere,’ ‘Spellfire’ serves as the second glimpse into the musical and thematic world of the new album.

The tracklist for FLAME’s new album is as follows:
