Ukrainian death metal band HELL:ON have released a new documentary, “20 Years Our Own Way,” chronicling their two-decade history. The film traces the band's journey from its beginnings in Zaporizhzhia in 2005 to its ongoing work on a new album, drawing on archival footage, live recordings, backstage scenes, and accounts from band members and musicians from the Ukrainian metal scene.

The documentary is not centered solely on HELL:ON's discography. The band tells the story of its two decades through the musicians, friends, fellow artists who shared stages with them, and those who joined them on the road over the years. In doing so, the film documents not only the band's musical output but also the community that formed around it and its experiences onstage and on tour.

Founding member Oleksii Pasko places the band's 20-year milestone in a particular context within the Ukrainian heavy metal scene. Pasko recalls that he used to consider bands with around a decade of history and a few albums to their name as established acts, while pointing out that HELL:ON have now been around for more than twice that long.

The documentary follows the band from its early years and first recordings through concerts, festivals, and tours outside Ukraine. Along the way, it also captures a part of Ukrainian heavy metal history that HELL:ON witnessed firsthand, tracing the evolution from small club shows to international stages through the band's own archives and recollections.

One of the film's notable aspects is that it does not turn those 20 years into a polished career narrative. HELL:ON have chosen to present the story as they experienced it. According to the band, the documentary is less about turning the past into a legend and more about documenting what those years were actually like.

The band also acknowledges that the war in Ukraine and the extremely difficult circumstances have become part of that story. HELL:ON emphasize that they continued making music and carrying on with their activities despite everything they went through, dedicating the film to everyone who has been with them along the way.

“20 Years Our Own Way” also arrives as HELL:ON continue working on their next album. In that sense, the documentary is not simply a record of the past, but also a document of the band's transition into the period beyond its 20th anniversary.
