LEFT TO DIE Unleash “Legion of Doom”: A Fresh Strike Into Death’s Dark Origins
LEFT TO DIE unleash “Legion of Doom”
Left To Die, a project bringing together seasoned names from the death metal scene, have released their new single “Legion of Doom” ahead of their upcoming debut full-length Initium Mortis. The album is set for release on July 17 via Relapse Records and stands as a near-devotional tribute to the band’s early death metal legacy.
The supergroup lineup features former Death members Terry Butler and Rick Rozz—key figures in the history of death metal—alongside musicians connected to Obituary and Massacre, as well as Matt Harvey and Gus Rios from Exhumed and Gruesome. The project aims to reanimate the raw and chaotic spirit of Death’s earliest recordings through a modern production approach.
The new single “Legion of Doom” arrives as the third preview from the album, following previously released tracks “Archangel” and “Witch of Hell.” With these songs, the band intends to pull listeners into a time tunnel back to the mid-’80s Mantas/Death demo era, when the foundations of the genre were still being shaped.
The idea for the album emerged from a process that began on stage. Extended touring performances of early Death material generated strong audience interest, ultimately pushing the group toward reinterpreting these recordings in a studio setting. The members emphasize that riffs and structures buried in lo-fi demo recordings are finding new life through a modern sonic lens.

Initium Mortis is positioned not simply as a tribute release, but as an alternative narrative of death metal’s moment of origin. The tracks reinterpret early ideas from the Chuck Schuldiner era, reshaped with today’s technical capabilities.
The group will also embark on an extensive tour throughout the summer and autumn, spanning Europe to Latin America. The setlist will feature material from the new album alongside reworked versions of early Death classics.
Initium Mortis is shaping up to be one of the most talked-about death metal releases of the year—equally appealing to those chasing nostalgia and those seeking pure sonic devastation.
