A Darkwave Touch for MESSA’s “At Races”
MESSA’s dark transformation
Italian doom metal outfit MESSA have unveiled a new interpretation of ‘At Races’, a track taken from their latest album “The Spin”. Created by Cold Cave, the remix reshapes the band’s heavy and atmospheric universe through the shadowy tones of darkwave and synthpop influences.
Released via Metal Blade Records and met with widespread critical acclaim, “The Spin” stood out as a record where MESSA expanded their doom metal foundations with elements drawn from a variety of genres. The new remix preserves the song’s intense atmosphere while introducing electronic textures, cold synth layers, and a melancholic approach, giving the track an entirely different identity.
In a statement, vocalist Sara revealed that her personal connection with Cold Cave made this collaboration especially meaningful. The artist explained that the emotional depth, dark aesthetic, and sense of alienation embedded in the band’s music have had a profound impact on her, adding that she is thrilled to share this collaboration with listeners.
Following their summer festival appearances, MESSA are preparing to return to the stage with an extensive run of live shows. The band will join Uncle Acid And The Deadbeats on their US tour this autumn. Running from September 5th through October 11th, the extensive North American trek will also include several special headlining performances from MESSA.
After their North American dates, the Italian band will embark on a European and UK headlining tour. Taking place from October 27th to November 21st, the tour will feature labelmates The Night Eternal as special guests. The run will include shows across France, Spain, the UK, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy.
MESSA’s musical identity stands out through their ability to merge doom metal’s crushing atmosphere with influences from jazz, blues, progressive rock, punk, black metal, and dark ambient. With “The Spin”, the band entered one of the most remarkable phases of their career by blending inspiration from the goth rock and darkwave worlds of the 1980s with their own experimental approach.
The album appeared on numerous prestigious year-end lists following its release, further strengthening MESSA’s unique position within the modern metal landscape. “At Races (Cold Cave Remix)” emerges as another reflection of the band’s boundary-pushing creative vision.
