One of SYMPHONY X’s founding bassists, Thomas Miller, is returning to the progressive metal scene after a lengthy absence with his new project, THOMAS MILLER’S LAZARUS EFFECT. The project’s self-titled debut album, which also marks a new chapter in Miller’s career, features contributions from his former SYMPHONY X bandmates Michael Romeo and Michael Pinnella.

Miller’s musical career began in the 1980s with various cover and original bands in New Jersey. After meeting guitarist Michael Romeo in 1986, the two worked together in several progressive projects before forming SYMPHONY X in 1994. Following the band’s signing with Japanese record label Zero Records and the release of its early albums, Miller performed with SYMPHONY X in Japan, Europe, and New York before stepping away from the band for personal reasons.

Miller continued writing and recording for various projects over the years, and his new venture began to take shape following a recording project with vocalist Hollywood How Portney in 2017. His interactions with fans and the musical chemistry he found with Portney led Miller toward the idea of starting a new band. The resulting THOMAS MILLER’S LAZARUS EFFECT also features former SYMPHONY X members Michael Romeo and Michael Pinnella.

The project’s SYMPHONY X connection extends to the production side of the debut album as well. Eric Rachel, who produced the band’s first six albums, handled mixing and mastering for THOMAS MILLER’S LAZARUS EFFECT. The album’s visual design was created by Rodrigo Gudiña.

Clocking in at 49 minutes, the album is built around progressive metal, majestic themes, and a range of musical layers. Miller chose 'When Darkness Falls' as the first preview of the album, with the sixth track representing the more direct metal side of that approach. Miller explains that the song incorporates classical influences through its use of harmonic minor.

“‘When Darkness Falls’ was written as a more straight-ahead, in-your-face metal song for the album, with a classical shadow due to its harmonic minor content.”

According to Miller, the song came together in about an hour, with the lyrics and harmonies quickly falling into place alongside Hollywood How Portney’s vocals.

'When Darkness Falls' is currently available to stream via Bandcamp and YouTube. THOMAS MILLER’S LAZARUS EFFECT’s self-titled debut album will be released by Sensory Records on October 30 on CD, LP, and digital formats. Preorders are now open as well.

The album’s tracklist includes 'Dark Horse', 'Fear No Evil', 'All The King’s Horses', and 'Closer To The Sun', along with the bonus track 'Aria Etude' and the five-part 'Sailing To Utopia'.
