UNHOLY REDEEMER Returns to Old-School Death Metal Darkness with “Journey Beyond Death”
What Lies Beyond?
Bringing together musicians from Australia, Denmark, and Finland, UNHOLY REDEEMER have released their second EP, “Journey Beyond Death.” The five-track release is available through a collaboration between Extremely Rotten Productions and Dark Descent Records on CD, vinyl, cassette, and digital formats.
Among the EP’s physical editions, the vinyl pressing is particularly noteworthy. Its B-side features the band’s 2024 debut demo, “A Fever to Dethrone All Kings,” as a bonus. This brings the band’s early recordings and new material together on the same physical release.
UNHOLY REDEEMER formed as a three-piece in 2023 and recorded their debut demo soon after. Drawing from the late-’80s death metal underground and the harsher, more down-tuned sound of the early ’90s, the band continues that approach on their new EP. With Tommi Grönqvist joining on bass, “Journey Beyond Death” took shape from five tracks completed in early 2026 and subsequently presented to Extremely Rotten Productions and Dark Descent Records, leading to an agreement to release the material.
The band’s musical references span different eras of death metal history, including MORBID ANGEL, SADISTIC INTENT, DEICIDE, NECRODEATH, IMMOLATION, INCANTATION, NECROPHAGIA, and VITAL REMAINS. UNHOLY REDEEMER brings these influences together through down-tuned guitars and deep, cavernous vocals, forging its own dark sound.
The band are not stopping with the release of their new EP, either. Jared Mawdsley of cult underground band DESTRUKTOR has joined the lineup on drums. UNHOLY REDEEMER have already begun work on their debut full-length, “The Sulphur Communion,” which is expected to arrive in 2027/2028.
