UNHOLY REDEEMER Returns to Old-School Death Metal with New EP
UNHOLY REDEEMER returns.
Death metal outfit UNHOLY REDEEMER, bringing together musicians from Australia, Denmark, and Finland, will release its second EP, "Journey Beyond Death", on August 28. The five-track release is preceded by its first single, 'Carrion of the Gods', which is now streaming.
Formed as a three-piece in 2023, UNHOLY REDEEMER draws its musical identity from the underground death metal scene of the late 1980s and early 1990s. The band's first release was the three-track demo "A Fever to Dethrone All Kings", which was issued on cassette by Extremely Rotten Productions and on CD by Sphere of Apparition in 2024.
Following the demo, bassist Tommi Grönqvist joined the lineup as the band began work on new material, eventually recording five tracks for "Journey Beyond Death". The EP's musical approach is built around down-tuned guitars, cavernous vocals, and a dark aesthetic rooted in the sound of early death metal.
UNHOLY REDEEMER cites recordings by bands such as MORBID ANGEL, SADISTIC INTENT, DEICIDE, NECRODEATH, IMMOLATION, INCANTATION, NECROPHAGIA, and VITAL REMAINS among its influences. On the new EP, the band combines the atmosphere of the late-'80s death metal underground with the heavier, down-tuned approach that emerged in the early '90s.
"Journey Beyond Death" will be released through a collaboration between Extremely Rotten Productions and Dark Descent Records on CD, vinyl, cassette, and digital formats. The vinyl edition will feature the band's first EP, "A Fever to Dethrone All Kings", as a bonus on the B-side.
Following the EP, UNHOLY REDEEMER added Jared Mawdsley of Destruktor to the lineup on drums. The band has also begun working on its planned debut full-length, "The Sulphur Communion", which is expected to arrive in 2027 or 2028.
