ABSTRACTED MIND – Break Down Your Fears
Melodic, orchestral, symphonic metal debut.
ABSTRACTED MIND's story leads to the debut full-length of a project that began in Buenos Aires before relocating to the Netherlands and evolving into a full band. Started by Juli Hope and Yamil Ladner in 2020, the project initially took shape through singles released in Spanish, before their move to the Netherlands led them toward English lyrics and a broader musical lineup. "Break Down Your Fears" is the first substantial recording to emerge from this transformation. Much of the album's musical backbone remains under the control of the founding duo; Hope and Ladner handling most of the songwriting, recording and production also explains the coherence of the album's sonic identity.
Opening with "The Spark", the album immediately reveals its orchestral approach, carrying traces of classical training. The track essentially serves as an intro, flowing directly into 'Where It Begins' to launch the album's main musical narrative. This is where ABSTRACTED MIND's formula becomes clear: orchestration and choral layers are placed over powerful guitars and drums, while melody remains at the center throughout. The particularly memorable chorus shows that the band does not allow its progressive touches to take precedence over melodic accessibility. "Despair" takes the same approach onto a heavier footing. The contrast between Yamil Ladner's growls and Juli Hope's clean vocals does more than provide vocal variety; it also creates a clear distinction between the track's darker side and its melodic face.
Hope's vocals are one of the album's most consistent elements. The high, crystalline character of her clean singing can shift toward darker tones and, at times, more forceful, rock-oriented delivery. On the dark orchestration of "Eternals", she opts for a more controlled performance, while "No Light Will Ever Remain" similarly uses different shades of Hope's voice following its orchestral opening. Ladner's growls, meanwhile, provide a constant weight against this bright vocal character. In this way, ABSTRACTED MIND balances the female-vocal-centered approach common to classic symphonic metal not only with orchestral grandeur but also with male extreme vocals.
On the guitar side, the band occasionally moves toward a more modern approach. The progressive character of the riffs and rhythmic movement in "Where It Begins" gains a more direct metal weight on "Shattered Mirror". The use of double bass gives the orchestral passages a more pronounced foundation here, while the guitars supply the necessary heaviness. Still, ABSTRACTED MIND's primary aim is not to make the guitars the sole center of attention. The guitar melodies generally work alongside the orchestration, meaning neither a solo nor a riff turns into a display of virtuosity detached from the overall arrangement. The guitar solo in "Despair" and the solo toward the end of "Rise Again" are examples of this approach. Particularly in the latter, the solo becomes part of the arrangement without abandoning the track's balladic character.
"Rise Again" is one of the album's most important tracks in this respect. Its calm opening, carried by piano and strings, combines with Hope's lower-register vocals to create a space distinct from the orchestral grandeur found elsewhere on the album. As the track progresses, the rhythm section enters and the arrangement expands, yet the fragility of the opening never disappears completely. This section demonstrates that ABSTRACTED MIND does not build its melodies solely around huge choirs and dense orchestration, while also broadening the album's dynamic range.
In the tracks that follow, the band reshapes this fundamental language at different levels of intensity. On "Who You Really Are", the orchestration, guitar riffs and rhythmic movement take on a faster-paced structure, while the use of brass instruments adds another color to the arrangement. "Our Memories Remain" brings epic choirs, guitar melodies and the contrast between the vocals back together alongside tempo and rhythmic changes. "The Messenger From The Stars" is a harder convergence of these elements. Beginning with brass instruments and choirs, the track makes its metal side more pronounced once the hard-hitting drums and growls enter; from there, the interplay between clean female vocals and harsh vocals becomes one of the track's central points of movement.
What stands out in these arrangements is that the orchestration never completely overwhelms the metal component. In symphonic metal, it is easy for large choirs and orchestral layers to move ahead of the guitars, drums and vocals, whereas "Break Down Your Fears" operates with a more balanced approach to the mix. The orchestral elements expand the scale of the music, but the rhythmic functions of the metal instrumentation remain largely intact. This keeps the album's cinematic side from becoming merely decorative. On the other hand, a slight sense of dissonance in some of the guitar melodies, particularly in passages such as "Eternals", suggests that the band has not yet refined all of its compositional choices to the same degree. Similarly, some vocal backing parts appear intended to add character, but they are not as convincing as the more natural vocal arrangements elsewhere on the album.
ABSTRACTED MIND's music is clearly rooted in the symphonic metal tradition. Connections to names such as NIGHTWISH, WITHIN TEMPTATION, EPICA, DELAIN and KAMELOT can be heard particularly through the orchestration, melodic vocals, choirs and dramatic arrangements. What is notable about the album, however, is that it draws on this legacy without leaning too heavily toward power metal. Its progressive approach also rarely takes the form of flashy technical passages, instead emerging through rhythmic movement, different vocal layers and changes in arrangement. The modern rhythmic touches in "Where It Begins" and the tempo changes in "Our Memories Remain", for example, serve the album's identity in this way; rather than claiming to step outside the genre, they create room for movement within the established symphonic metal framework.
"The Void" closes the album by returning it to a more atmospheric footing. With electric piano and more restrained strings taking the foreground, the outro creates a sense of closure that mirrors the introductory function of "The Spark". The eleven-track structure therefore takes on a cohesive form, with a nine-song main body positioned between two instrumental pieces.
The most important achievement of "Break Down Your Fears" is the band's ability to use its classical orchestration knowledge without separating it from the fundamental mechanics of metal. The album has not yet fully shed its influences or established a completely distinctive vocabulary within the genre; some familiar references from the past two decades of symphonic metal remain highly visible. But viewed as a debut full-length, it makes clear which elements matter most to the band: strong melodies, expansive orchestral arrangements, the contrast between clean and harsh vocals, and progressive rhythmic movement when needed. For that reason, "Break Down Your Fears" matters less as an attempt to invent a new formula for the genre than as a foundation on which ABSTRACTED MIND can build a musical identity of its own.
