Greece-based CEREMONIAL WORSHIP began in 2016 as a solo project by High Priest C.W. and gradually evolved into a more complete lineup over time. Combining the dark atmosphere of the Hellenic black metal tradition with a more abstract and unsettling riffing approach, the band revisits the ritualistic legacy of the past through a more aggressive interpretation on its third album, "Between Sleep and Death". Released through Eternal Death, the album stands as a reflection of the band’s attempt to define its own identity without abandoning its early roots.

With "Between Sleep and Death", CEREMONIAL WORSHIP takes the raw essence of Hellenic black metal and reshapes it through a more abstract and restless riffing approach. The album’s guitar work is driven particularly by the sharp and cold riffs written by High Priest C.W.; however, the goal here is not simply to recreate the aesthetics of ’90s black metal, but to combine the atmospheric intensity of that era with a more controlled compositional approach. The result is a sound world that consciously distances itself from polished modern production standards, remaining dirty without becoming completely uncontrolled.

The album’s most defining characteristic is its reliance on repetition and tension rather than melodic development. High Priest C.W.’s guitars bring together the mystical and ritualistic side of early Hellenic black metal with the sharper aggression of second-wave black metal. There are moments that recall the atmospheric approach of bands such as early KAWIR, LEGION OF DOOM, and NOCTERNITY; however, CEREMONIAL WORSHIP is not simply recreating the past. The extended repetition of certain riff ideas strengthens the hypnotic effect of the songs while also becoming one of the album’s most debatable aspects. Although this approach is effective in building atmosphere, it occasionally weakens the sense of progression within the compositions.

The rhythm section is one of the elements that helps balance this sense of stillness to a certain degree. Petros P.’s bass lines and George K.’s drumming do not merely serve as background support for the guitar wall; they define the album’s physical weight, particularly during its more forceful passages. George K.’s drumming carries the combative character of second-wave black metal through more direct and aggressive strikes, while some transitions attempt to break the album’s steady flow with thrash-influenced rhythmic shifts. However, these experiments do not always develop into a fully integrated part of the overall structure. The more dynamic and thrash-oriented sections within "Where the Shadow Awakes" remain examples of moments that do not completely merge with the album’s broader narrative when compared to the darker and more restrained structures surrounding them.

The vocals of The Whisperer of Night represent one of the album’s strongest connections to the past. With a sharp, raspy, and worn-out tone, the performance recalls the raw aggression of old Swedish black/death metal recordings. This approach deliberately avoids the more controlled or layered vocal techniques often heard in modern black metal. Rather than serving as a display of technical ability, the vocal lines function primarily as an atmospheric element, combining with the cold nature of the guitars to reinforce the album’s underground character.

The production approach plays a significant role in shaping the identity of "Between Sleep and Death". The album preserves the aesthetics of ’90s underground recordings without relying entirely on a lo-fi approach. The slightly rough guitar tone and the organic feel of the overall mix move the listener away from studio perfection and toward a more physical sense of performance. This choice can be interpreted as a conscious stance against the overly clean and highly detailed production styles frequently found in today’s extreme metal scene. However, this rawness does not always compensate for the lack of musical variety; in some sections, the repetition used to create atmosphere extends beyond the point of effectiveness within the album’s own boundaries.

One of the most notable aspects of CEREMONIAL WORSHIP is the attempt to bring together two different eras of Hellenic black metal. On one side, the band moves away from the legacy of early representatives such as Rotting Christ, VARATHRON, and NECROMANTIA; on the other, it embraces the darker and more abstract tendencies of the scene’s second-wave period. "Between Sleep and Death" attempts to establish its own character between these two directions, but the album’s success lies less in introducing revolutionary ideas and more in how convincingly it rearranges familiar aesthetic codes.

The visual and aesthetic approach moves parallel to these musical choices. The album title reinforces ancient and ritualistic associations, creating an atmosphere consistent with the band’s Hellenic black metal identity. The visual language does not completely break away from the genre’s traditions; instead, it creates a framework that supports the historical and occult references carried by the music. However, much like the musical side, this approach is built around rearranging familiar imagery rather than reinventing it.

"Between Sleep and Death" is an album that does not cater to listeners seeking constant variation or immediately accessible melodic structures. Rather than transforming the fundamental tools of the genre, CEREMONIAL WORSHIP explores how effectively those tools can still be used. The album’s strongest quality is its balance between raw atmosphere and controlled execution; its weakness is that this atmospheric focus occasionally overshadows structural diversity. Ultimately, this is not a record that reshapes the Hellenic black metal tradition, but rather one that reinterprets its dark legacy within today’s underground scene, offering a sincere and distinctive expression that carries its imperfections alongside its character.
