ALBUM REVIEW
OBSCURA QALMA – Immortality Through Ashes
Symphonic grandeur meets dark extreme metal.

The Italian band OBSCURA QALMA brings together symphonic grandeur, a dark atmosphere, and a modern approach to extreme metal on Immortality Through Ashes. Rooted in orchestral blackened death metal, the album stands out from the first listen for the prominence of its symphonic elements. The band's music is not built solely on heaviness and aggression; grand arrangements, atmospheric transitions, and textures drawn from various extreme metal subgenres also play an important role in its compositions.
The guitar sound is decidedly modern. Rather than the raw, dirty, and occasionally uncontrolled character of old-school death metal, the band opts for a more polished, defined tone that aligns with contemporary production standards. That said, I noticed riffs and melodic touches in certain passages that brought MELECHESH to mind. These moments lend the music an exotic, occult quality while creating an interesting sense of cohesion with the album's symphonic character.

Symphonic layers carry considerable weight in the band's musical approach. At times, they expand the intensity generated by the guitars and drums, giving the songs a cinematic dimension. Meanwhile, breakdowns placed between the heavier sections introduce a controlled deathcore element. Influences from other genres, including technical death metal and blackgaze, further broaden the album's musical palette. The combination of these elements suggests that OBSCURA QALMA has no intention of confining itself to a single formula.
There is also one detail that caught my attention regarding the production of the recordings I listened to: the overall volume seemed quite low, forcing me to turn it up considerably. The sound itself also has considerable depth. I cannot say for certain whether this stems from the album's mastering choices or the characteristics of the recordings I heard. Nevertheless, the combination of modern guitar tones and dense symphonic arrangements left a distinct impression on me.
Immortality Through Ashes is an eight-track album that draws on the Faustian narrative to explore themes such as desire, power, transcendence, pain, egoism, and arrogance. Its conceptual framework, informed by figures such as Goethe, Kant, and Baudelaire, reinforces the music's dark and dramatic character. In particular, the narrative in which death ceases to be an ending and instead becomes the beginning of a new fall fits the album's theatrical atmosphere.
Ultimately, OBSCURA QALMA is a band rooted in traditional extreme metal but moving in a modern direction in terms of sound and arrangements. The dominant symphonic elements, modern guitar tones, and occasional passages reminiscent of MELECHESH give Immortality Through Ashes a character of its own. For me, the album's most striking quality is the way it brings all these elements together within a dark and grand atmosphere. Rather than embracing the raw, unpolished approach of old-school metal, the album leans towards a more refined, layered, and cinematic vision of extreme metal, opening up a range of possibilities for listeners through its diverse musical influences.
