When France’s underground scene first caught my attention in the early 2000s, the country was producing outstanding Black Metal bands from every corner. In recent years, I’ve also seen just how vicious its Death Metal scene can be. Hailing from Brittany, SÉPULCRE return with their debut full-length following the 2022 EP "Cursed Ways of Sheol". Released on 16 October 2026 via Invictus Productions, "Cryptic Temple of Otherworldly Abhorrations" combines the raw, menacing character of death metal with doom-laden passages, dark melodies and a ritualistic atmosphere. What defines this 42-minute, seven-track album is how these elements work together rather than operating independently. Even when the music speeds up, its unsettling atmosphere remains intact; when it slows down, the aggression never entirely disappears.

The opening track, ‘Ominous Path (to the Nightside)’, begins with an eerie atmosphere built around strings and bell-like sounds. The music then reaches an entirely different level of intensity as the guitars turn harsher and the drums pick up speed. Blast beats, razor-sharp riffs and guitar melodies that shift in character as they climb into higher registers prevent the track from relying on speed alone. Heavier passages give the music room to breathe while amplifying the impact of the next burst of aggression. This is a good starting point for understanding SÉPULCRE’s compositional approach: rather than simply stringing aggressive passages together, the songs establish controlled transitions between different levels of intensity.

This approach continues in different forms throughout ‘Abyssum Drakon’ and ‘Cryptic Temple...’. In the former, shifts between high-speed passages and heavy mid-tempo sections bring the catchiness of the rhythm guitars to the fore. The latter opens with guitar feedback interacting with the drums before moving into a heavier section in which the bass becomes more prominent. SÉPULCRE draw on the familiar vocabulary of traditional death metal riffing, but they do not repeat their ideas at a constant speed or with the same emphasis throughout. Subtle rhythmic variations and guitar lines that occasionally step out in front of the main riff help the tracks develop distinct characters of their own.

The album’s atmospheric side does not so much soften the music’s brutality as extend it in a different direction. ‘...of Otherworldly Abhorrations’ dispenses with vocals entirely, focusing instead on the instrumental arrangement. This brings the interplay between guitar, bass and drums into sharper focus, allowing the pressure established by the preceding tracks to continue through a different arrangement. The choice demonstrates that the album does not rely solely on vocal intensity and dense riffing to hold its own. However, the frequent return of the same dark atmosphere and similar guitar tones can make some tracks difficult to distinguish from one another. This shared sonic identity contributes to the album’s cohesion, but at times it also obscures the individual character of its songs.

‘Katabasis’ is one of the clearest demonstrations of SÉPULCRE’s command of tempo and dynamics. The initially slower arrangement gradually gathers momentum as the guitars sharpen and the drums accelerate, before the music settles back into a more crushing pace. These shifts do more than change the level of intensity; they continually reshape the listener’s relationship with the rhythm. The balance between the album’s dark atmosphere and traditional death metal aggression becomes particularly apparent when the guitars break away from the main riffs and venture into freer, higher-register melodies.

‘Towards the Unknown’ and ‘Darkness Rules Supreme’ bring the melodic elements further to the forefront while retaining the album’s overall character. In the former, guitar melodies and rhythmic movement weave between the heavier passages, keeping the track flowing. The closing track, meanwhile, brings the album to a controlled conclusion through heavier riffs, emphatic drum hits and a renewed surge in intensity. The vocals never consistently overpower the instruments, serving the music as a whole instead. Their harsh delivery, which occasionally climbs into higher registers, works alongside the guitars’ melodic movement to extend the album’s death metal foundations towards black metal territory.

The production also plays an important role in maintaining this balance. The guitars retain their bite, the drums their power and the bass its weight, yet the instruments never completely bury one another. The clarity of the bass and drums is particularly effective in the slower passages, reinforcing the weight of the riffs. The transitions between atmospheric passages and more intense sections remain clear, preventing the album from feeling unnecessarily drawn out despite its seven tracks and 42-minute runtime. That said, SÉPULCRE do not establish a musical identity that entirely separates them from the dark death metal language employed by many bands working in a similar vein. The traditional heaviness associated with classic acts such as INCANTATION and AUTOPSY intersects with the more atmospheric approaches of bands like GRAVE MIASMA and CRUCIAMENTUM. SÉPULCRE’s distinction lies less in transforming these influences into an entirely new musical vocabulary than in maintaining a consistent balance between aggression and atmosphere.

"Cryptic Temple of Otherworldly Abhorrations" is a debut full-length that explores how death metal’s established elements can be deployed at different levels of intensity without abandoning the genre’s foundations. The slower passages feel like more than transitional devices added merely for contrast; they reinforce the impact of the faster sections while sustaining the compositions’ dark character. On the other hand, this consistency occasionally edges towards predictability, narrowing the scope for originality that might give the album a more distinctive place within the genre. SÉPULCRE do not expand death metal’s boundaries by venturing into uncharted territory here, but they establish a solid identity by combining traditional riff writing with atmospheric arrangements and carefully judged tempo changes. For listeners seeking the ferocity of classic death metal alongside a gloomier, doom-influenced atmosphere, "Cryptic Temple of Otherworldly Abhorrations" stands out as a noteworthy starting point for an approach the band could develop further.
