Chicago-based experimental post-punk/doom collective ANATOMY OF HABIT return with their fifth studio album, Paired Sentinels. Due out on July 31st, the record is positioned as the band’s most cohesive and most intense work in recent years. Alongside the announcement, the first single “Always Arriving” has been released, and a special listening and conversation event in Chicago has also been confirmed.

Since 2008, the group has carved out a singular space between post-punk, doom metal, industrial, noise rock, and shoegaze, and on the new album they further deepen this hybrid language. Paired Sentinels, with its long-form compositional structures and atmosphere woven from recurring motifs, is described as the high-water mark of ANATOMY OF HABIT’s recent creative trajectory.

The album stands out as a collective effort from the band’s most stable lineup: guitarist Alex Latus, metal percussion artist Isidro Reyes, drummer Skyler Rowe, vocalist and analog synth operator Mark Solotroff, and bassist/lap steel guitarist Sam Wagster. This long-standing collaboration results in a musical equilibrium that fuses harsh rhythmic structures with fragile, atmospheric textures.

Beyond its sonic weight, Paired Sentinels is deeply rooted in a dense internal thematic world. Through recurring structures, it explores memory, identity, loss, and the unstable nature of desire. The lyrics move between internal monologue and sharp observation, drawing the listener into an almost ritualistic narrative cycle.

For the visual aspect, the album features Jeff Gibson’s “Untitled (Sedlec Ossuary),” a collage combining anatomical diagrams with aesthetics of decay and destruction. The artwork establishes a strong parallel with the album’s themes of mortality, memory, and dissolution. The visual design is once again handled by Jonathan Canady, a long-time collaborator of the band.

On the production side, a familiar name returns: Sanford Parker. The band worked with Parker for the fourth time, while mastering was handled by Collin Jordan. The result is a sound that is both raw and strikingly clear — a sonic language that sustains a constant tension between density and openness.

The album’s opening track, “Always Arriving,” as Solotroff puts it, centers on a continuous state of transition, the reflex of leaning on the past to stay upright, and the existential sense of “never quite arriving.” The track’s repetitive structure continues the band’s long-developed aesthetic of psychological excavation.

Paired Sentinels will be released on LP, CD, cassette, and digital formats. The LP edition will also include a limited bonus 7-inch featuring two instrumental tracks.

In related news, the band will host a launch event on July 18th at Twelve Ten Gallery in Chicago ahead of the album’s release. The evening will feature a talk, listening session, and Q&A, offering an in-depth reflection on the band’s nearly two-decade-long journey.
