GATES OF KIEV Release Their Self-Titled Debut Album
Four extended tracks reveal their sound
Dutch progressive rock trio GATES OF KIEV have released their self-titled debut album today via The Laser’s Edge, available on digital platforms and CD. Spanning four extended tracks and approximately 40 minutes, the record showcases the band’s approach to blending psychedelic rock, jazz, and 1970s progressive rock influences.
The musical foundations of GATES OF KIEV date back to the teenage years of childhood friends Tomas Mesman (keyboards) and Hessel Braat (drums), who began making music together at an early age. Initially taking shape through hard rock-oriented jam sessions in a small garage, the duo eventually expanded into a trio after meeting bassist Eszl De Vois within Amsterdam’s live music scene. Coming from the underground psychedelic scene, De Vois played an important role in the development of the band’s musical direction.
The band’s name comes from the piece of the same title featured on Emerson, Lake & Palmer’s live album Pictures At An Exhibition. This choice also offers a glimpse into GATES OF KIEV’s musical influences. Hammond organ and Mellotron-driven arrangements, psychedelic textures, and jazz elements form the backbone of the trio’s extended, largely instrumental compositions. The occasional vocals address personal struggles and societal issues.

The 40-minute album consists of four extended tracks. Recorded by Ahmad Mansour at Ijland Studio in Amsterdam, the record was mixed and mastered in Norway by Jacob Holm-Lupo of White Willow. The cover artwork was created by Italian heavy psych artist Mont Doom.
In a statement marking the release of their debut, GATES OF KIEV expressed their appreciation for the positive reactions from listeners so far and thanked everyone involved in bringing the album to life.
The album is now available on CD and digitally through The Laser’s Edge. The vinyl edition has been slightly delayed and is expected to arrive in the coming weeks.
The band will celebrate the release with a special hometown show at Maloe Melo in Amsterdam on November 11. GATES OF KIEV plan to share further announcements about live performances and other developments in the new year.
