HEILUNG Returns to the Studio for New Album, Announces “Sagas”

HEILUNG are preparing to end their silence of more than a year this October. The collective has announced that they will return to Lava Studios to begin work on a new studio album, while also unveiling a special release titled “Sagas”, featuring previously unreleased recordings.

“Sagas” will collect recordings created by HEILUNG in collaboration with video game developer Ninja Theory for Hellblade II: Senua’s Saga. The release will also include recordings that were not used in the game, bringing previously unheard material from the creative process that began eight years ago to listeners for the first time.

The collective says their work with Ninja Theory evolved into a long and intensive period of creation that brought together Iceland’s vast landscapes and the innermost corners of the human mind. Some of the recordings inspired by everything from underground ice caves and volcanoes to lava deserts and the depths of the human mind found their way into Hellblade II: Senua’s Saga, while a significant portion has remained unreleased until now.

HEILUNG also emphasize that “Sagas” is not an ordinary release. While details of the project have yet to be revealed, the collective have released the first trailer for it and announced that more information will be shared soon.

As for the new album, HEILUNG will return to Lava Studios in October to begin recording their fourth official studio album. After more than a year away from the stage and the creative process, the collective will mark their return not only with new music but also with an approach centered on what they describe as the idea of “healing.”

In a statement, HEILUNG said they prefer to withdraw into their own creative space by shutting out the noise of the outside world, adding that the atmosphere created by automation and conflict in the present day has made that need even more apparent. The collective also stated that their approach, rooted in history, spirituality and art, will not be influenced by modern ideologies, trends or automation.

HEILUNG’s discography began with “Ofnir” in 2015, followed by “Futha” in 2019 and “Drif” in 2022. Across these releases, the collective have maintained an approach that combines prehistoric and archaic instrumentation with electronic elements. Shaped by founding member and producer Christopher Juul’s electronic touches, Kai Uwe Faust’s throat singing and Maria Franz’s vocals, their music is built around the “amplified history” concept they use to describe their work.

The period following HEILUNG’s latest studio album, “Drif”, also saw the collective take their ritual performances around the world. In 2025, they embarked on tours across Europe, Australia and New Zealand, appearing at festivals including Roskilde Festival, Download Festival and Glastonbury. They went on hiatus after completing their 2025 “Amplified History” tour.

As recording begins in October, HEILUNG’s period of silence will come to an end, while “Sagas” will bring previously unreleased recordings from the collective’s past creative work into the present. A release date for “Sagas” has yet to be announced.
