FRONTLINE METALPUNK UNDER FIRE: MILITARY SHADOW RETURN WITH NEW SINGLE
Metal Vigilante
One of the standout names on the Japanese metalpunk scene, Military Shadow, have delivered the first signal from their long-awaited second album. The band has unveiled a brand-new track titled “Metal Vigilante.” The song serves as the opening statement for Deathly Ambush, the band’s upcoming full-length set for release later this year via Hells Headbangers.
Formed in 2017, Military Shadow have been steadily forging an aggressive, raw and unfiltered energy at the crossroads of metal and punk. Neither a purely nostalgic nod to punk roots nor a band confined to metal’s technical boundaries, they operate as a unit that channels the most abrasive aspects of both worlds straight into full-scale attack mode. Their previous split releases and especially the 2020 record Blood for Freedom cemented their status as a fixture of the underground circuit.
The new album Deathly Ambush aims to push that legacy even further. The first unveiled track, “Metal Vigilante,” makes it clear that the band have intensified both their riff density and melodic aggression. Guitars cut sharper, solos take on a more dominant presence, and the songwriting feels more immediate and memorable. The production retains an analog edge, offering a raw surface that further amplifies the track’s street-level intensity.
On a broader scale, the album draws from a wide spectrum of influences, stretching from Japan’s 1980s “Burning Spirits” tradition to the European speed metal scene. At the same time, the band reframe classic metalpunk with a contemporary edge of brutality, while the gritty, occasionally piercing vocal performance pushes that aggression even further into the foreground.
Military Shadow have delivered a comeback bold enough to reignite debate around what metalpunk even means today. “Metal Vigilante” feels like nothing more than the first warning siren of the storm ahead. Details regarding Deathly Ambush are expected to be revealed in the near future.
