The Cowpunk Revolt Returns
New EP’ “Too Outlaw For Outlaw Country"
Kentucky-bred cowpunk legends Nine Pound Hammer return after a long hiatus with their new EP Too Outlaw For Outlaw Country. The 10-inch picture disc, released via Reptilian Records, will hit listeners on July 10. Coinciding with the release, the band is also kicking off a new touring cycle spanning both the US and Europe.
The new effort fuses the band’s signature punk energy with its country roots in a brutally direct collision. Alongside four new tracks penned by the duo Scott Luallen and Blaine Cartwright, the EP also features two cover versions of songs by Billy Joe Shaver and Hank Mills/Dick Jennings. The record stands as a modern, aggressive counterstatement to the classic outlaw country aesthetic.
Statements from the band make the record’s intent crystal clear: a sharp critique and challenge aimed at the recent wave of music shaped under the “outlaw country” banner in recent years. The title track in particular stands as a direct manifesto of this stance, fusing punk aggression with traditional country twang into a single, unrelenting statement.

On the production side, the work is rock solid. Recording was completed at Underground Studios, with production, mixing, and mastering handled by Brian Pulito. Visually, the band continues its characteristic DIY aesthetic, supported by Matt Simpson’s photography and a collective art direction approach.
Too Outlaw For Outlaw Country is not only a studio return, but also a precursor to the band’s upcoming full-length record. It is seen as a harbinger of a complete album scheduled for release in 2027.
On the touring front, Nine Pound Hammer are staying highly active. The run begins in early July in Kentucky, continues through stops in Norway and the Netherlands, and leads to Belgium’s Sjock Festival. There, they are set to share the stage with names such as Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, L7, and Cock Sparrer. Additional US dates in Ohio and Michigan are also scheduled for the fall.
One of the loudest and most uncompromising names in the cowpunk scene, Nine Pound Hammer use this return to both reaffirm their legacy and issue a defiant statement of intent toward the genre’s contemporary interpretations.
