A THOUSAND SUFFERINGS' four choices for "Valley Of A Sun" have no common musical background. Spanning everything from Zjef Vanuytsel's Flemish folk tradition to Alice Cooper's theatrical hard rock, Thin Lizzy's classic rock and Therapy?'s alternative metal, this repertoire deliberately steers far away from the kind of material one might expect from the band's own discography. This is where the EP's appeal begins: A THOUSAND SUFFERINGS do not simply bring these songs closer to their own genre; they shift their center of gravity.

'De Zotte Morgen' is the most striking example of this transformation. The sense of alienation already present in Vanuytsel's melancholic, narrative-driven composition takes on a suffocating character here through heavier guitars and PJ's dramatic vocals. The contrast between the calm opening and the arrival of the distortion keeps the track from becoming a straightforward black/doom cover; the unease embedded in the lyrics is reinterpreted through the physical weight of the music. A THOUSAND SUFFERINGS' choice is therefore not only surprising, but musically convincing as well.

On 'Halo Of Flies', which runs for more than nine minutes, Alice Cooper's theatrical rock framework is dismantled and rebuilt into something slower and heavier. While traces of the original melody remain, the guitars and rhythmic structure pull the track into a gloomier territory. 'Jailbreak', meanwhile, is the interpretation that stays closest to its source material. Although much of Thin Lizzy's energetic character has been pared back, the song's fundamental momentum does not disappear entirely. Compared with the other transformations on the EP, this is a more controlled reconstruction.

'Stories', on the other hand, leaves very little of Therapy?'s alternative rock roots behind, instead leaning into the heavy gait of doom and black metal. The cold lead guitar and dragging rhythm shift the song's emotional weight elsewhere; at the same time, the distinctiveness of the original chorus is not equally effective in this version. The reinterpretation therefore reaches its most radical form here, while also becoming the EP's most debatable in certain respects.

The success of "Valley Of A Sun" lies not only in its ability to absorb four very different songs into the same sound, but also in identifying which elements of each can be carried into A THOUSAND SUFFERINGS' dark world. The result is not a collection of new compositions, but a cohesive EP that treats the concept of the cover as an act of reshaping rather than imitation, using the distance between genres in creative ways. 'De Zotte Morgen' in particular gives the strongest expression of this approach by preserving the emotional core of its source material while carrying it into the band's far more sombre aesthetic.
