ANAGNORISIS releases their second single, “Caregriever,” after a ten-year hiatus.
What changed during a decade?
Louisville, Kentucky-based black metal band ANAGNORISIS is returning after nearly a decade of silence with its fourth studio album, “Caregriever.” Due out October 23, the album is preceded by the new track ‘Choke’, which has premiered via Everything Is Noise.

At the heart of “Caregriever” is the emotional burden of watching a loved one gradually decline over five years and eventually die. Addressing experiences such as grief, anger, guilt, depression, isolation, and exhaustion, the album focuses less on death itself than on watching a person slowly disappear from your life years before their death. The album’s title refers to this state in which caregiving and grief become inseparable.
The story behind the record emerged directly from the experiences of ANAGNORISIS vocalist Zachary Kerr. In 2023, Kerr began working on solo material under the name Caregriever as a way of processing the physical and emotional exhaustion caused by caring full-time for his father-in-law, who later passed away. When longtime collaborator and guitarist Zak Denham joined the project, the material grew beyond a solo endeavor and soon became the foundation for ANAGNORISIS’ fourth album.
The new material was subsequently shared with Josh Mumford and Cody McCoy, bringing the band’s core lineup back together. Recording for the album began in the summer of 2024, marking ANAGNORISIS’ first new material in nearly a decade.
“Caregriever” also marks a different musical direction for the band while continuing its post-black metal approach. The symphonic elements that were prominent on previous releases have largely been pulled back, with the new material moving toward a darker and more direct sound. Industrial music and punk influences are also woven into the new approach.
‘Choke’ is one of the tracks that reveals this shift. According to Zachary Kerr, the song is more immediate and suffocating than the intensity and emotional weight conveyed by ‘Nothing Left To Give’. In Kerr’s view, the two tracks serve as a kind of prologue occupying the album’s first quarter, laying the groundwork for the story carried through the following six tracks.
Zak Denham and Zachary Kerr handled the production and recording of “Caregriever”, while drums and bass were recorded at Top Track Studios. Denham also handled the album’s mixing and mastering. Josh Mumford contributes backing vocals, while Niels Riethorst provides vocals and lyrics on ‘Death Of Man’; James E. Kerr handled the samples. The album artwork was created by August Friedrich Schenck and Charles Maurand.
The album’s physical editions will be handled by several different entities. Bölverk Collective will oversee the US CD pressing, ANAGNORISIS’ own Negative Reflections will handle the US LP pressing, and Vendetta Records will release the CD and LP editions in Europe. Preorders for the limited cassette edition from So Below Productions will also begin this Friday.
The album’s release will also coincide with ANAGNORISIS’ return to the stage. The band will perform at Liars Club in Chicago on October 23 for the “Caregriever” release show, marking its first concert in ten years. The following day, the band will play Sabbatic in Milwaukee with Unsouling. Midwest dates for December are expected to be announced in the coming days.
ANAGNORISIS has also been added to the lineup for Northwest Terror Fest, taking place May 6-8, 2027, in Seattle. The festival lineup includes Artificial Brain, Catharsis, Deadguy, Napalm Death, and Lair Of The Minotaur, among others. The event will be part of a run of tour dates accompanying the band’s first shows on the West Coast.
Active from 2003 to 2016, ANAGNORISIS began working on new material again in 2024. The band reached a wider audience with the albums “Beyond All Light” (2013) and “Peripeteia” (2016), before entering an extended hiatus following a limited run of touring in support of “Peripeteia”. After that period of silence, “Caregriever” has taken shape as more than a new album: it continues the band’s personal narrative developed over years around experiences of caregiving, responsibility, death, and loss.
