Israeli progressive metal and ethno-rock collective SUBMASQ are preparing to enter a significant new chapter in their career with their upcoming album “Spirit Animal.” Formerly known as Subterranean Masquerade, the band will release their seventh studio album on September 18, marking their first release under American label Willowtip Records.

The band has also unveiled the music video for “Monuments,” the first glimpse into the upcoming record. With their new material, SUBMASQ bring together the intricate structures of progressive metal with elements of alternative rock and grunge, while exploring darker themes rooted in personal experiences and collective memory.

SUBMASQ describe “Spirit Animal” as one of the most personal works they have created to date. The album explores themes including trauma, addiction, inner struggles, the search for identity, and confronting the past across nine new tracks. Throughout the record, the band further develops their distinctive atmosphere by blending ethnic instrumentation with a modern progressive rock approach.

“Monuments” stands as the first representation of the album’s overall spirit. Inspired by the historic streets of Valletta during the writing process, vocalist Davidavi Dolev places traces of the past and memories that must not be lost at the heart of the song’s lyrics. The band describes the track as a meeting point between the technical side of progressive metal and the raw emotional intensity of grunge.

The production of “Spirit Animal” took place between Tel Aviv and Sweden. Recording sessions included the renowned Swedish studio Fascination Street Studios, while the album’s mixing was handled by Adam Noble, known for his work with artists including Paul McCartney, Biffy Clyro, and Leprous. Grammy-nominated engineer Robin Schmidt, who has worked with Iggy Pop, Nothing But Thieves, and Elton John, took care of the mastering.

The new album also features a guest appearance from acclaimed guitarist Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal. Performing on the opening track “Cardamom,” Bumblefoot contributes to SUBMASQ’s progressive soundscape enriched with ethnic influences.

The music video for “Monuments” was created by Lynx Videography. Filmed during one of the band’s live performances, the video aims to capture the direct connection and energy shared between SUBMASQ and their audience.

“Spirit Animal” will serve as the first step in a new era for SUBMASQ through their partnership with Willowtip Records. The album will receive worldwide distribution via Universal Music Group, allowing the band to reach a broader audience across Europe, North America, and beyond.

SUBMASQ are also expanding their touring plans in support of the new record. In January 2027, the band will embark on a European tour with Rhapsody of Fire, while additional festival appearances and international dates will be announced in the future.
