Thomas Miller Releases Debut Album with New Project Featuring Symphony X’s Michael Romeo and Michael Pinnella
Miller returns alongside former bandmates
Thomas Miller, one of the founding bassists of SYMPHONY X, has released the self-titled debut album from his new project, THOMAS MILLER’S LAZARUS EFFECT, today via Sensory Records. Miller is joined on the album by his former bandmates, guitarist Michael Romeo and keyboardist Michael Pinnella.
The 49-minute progressive metal release marks Miller’s return to the genre after more than 25 years. Vocals are handled by Howard “Hollywood How” Portney, while the involvement of Romeo and Pinnella, both familiar from Miller’s SYMPHONY X days, is another notable aspect of the album.
Miller’s musical career began in New Jersey in the 1980s. After meeting guitarist Michael Romeo in 1986, the two worked together on various projects before forming SYMPHONY X in 1994. Miller appeared on the band’s self-titled debut, as well as subsequent releases including “The Damnation Game”, “The Divine Wings of Tragedy” and “Twilight in Olympus”, before eventually leaving the group for personal reasons.
Continuing his musical work across various projects and developing his skills as a composer, Miller joined forces with vocalist Howard “Hollywood How” Portney for a recording project in 2017. Inspired by their musical chemistry, Miller decided to establish a new project, which eventually took shape as THOMAS MILLER’S LAZARUS EFFECT.

Musically, the album brings together the grand melodies of progressive metal and a variety of other musical elements. It should appeal to listeners who follow bands such as DREAM THEATER, CIRCUS MAXIMUS, REDEMPTION and KAMELOT, alongside SYMPHONY X. Mixing and mastering were handled by Eric Rachel, whose credits include work with SYMPHONY X, BLACK SABBATH and THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER. The album’s artwork was created by Rodrigo Gudiña.
In a statement accompanying the album’s release, Miller described his return to the progressive metal scene after more than 25 years as complete, adding:
“After more than 25 years, the wait is over and my return to the progressive metal scene is officially complete. I’ve poured my creative soul into this work. I’m grateful to my old friends and the new additions who helped make this a reality. I hope this musical journey is only just beginning. I look forward to meeting you on stage in the future and bringing you much more.”
