UNVERKALT Revisit the Pain of History with “Ænæ Lithi”
Ænæ Lithi
German-Greek post-metal collective UNVERKALT have released a new music video for “Ænæ Lithi”, a track taken from their third studio album Héréditaire. With a song carrying the heavy scars of the past, the band pays tribute to those who lost their lives during the Asia Minor Catastrophe of 1922, transforming music into a dark reflection of historical memory.
Meaning “Eternal Oblivion”, “Ænæ Lithi” explores the forced migrations, losses, and collective trauma endured by Greek communities living across different regions of Anatolia in the early 20th century. Through the song’s atmosphere, UNVERKALT aim to convey not only the suffering of a specific era, but also the weight of memories and wounds passed down through generations.
The track’s musical structure strongly reflects the band’s cinematic approach to post-metal. Heavy drum patterns, dark guitar textures, and rising orchestral arrangements merge with clarinet, qanun, string instruments, and traditional rhythms, creating a timeless atmosphere. Dimitra Kalavrezou’s Greek vocals rise like a lament from the past, further intensifying the emotional depth of the song.
The music video for “Ænæ Lithi” was directed and edited by the band’s guitarist and composer Themis Ioannou. Featuring historical photographs, the visual piece not only brings the song’s themes to life but also reveals Ioannou’s personal connection to his own family history.
Ioannou stated that the track carries a deeply personal meaning for him, dedicating the video to the members of his family who are no longer with him and to the millions of people who were forced to leave their ancestral homes after 1922. This personal perspective transforms “Ænæ Lithi” from a historical narrative into a musical expression of individual memory and collective trauma.

UNVERKALT’s new album Héréditaire marks the band’s first release through Season of Mist. Throughout the record, the band explores themes of memory, inherited suffering, and trauma carried across generations, expanding the atmospheric foundation established in their previous works with a harsher and darker musical approach.
The album also introduces black metal influences and extreme vocals alongside the band’s post-metal roots. This new direction pushes UNVERKALT’s dramatic and cinematic universe into a more intense territory while further strengthening their distinctive approach to creating immersive atmospheres.
Héréditaire also features Sakis Tolis as a guest vocalist. With their latest release, UNVERKALT continue to confront the shadows of the past, exploring the invisible burdens carried by human memory through a heavy and compelling musical narrative.
