Acherontas - For the Blood of Tiamat

Atmosphere… A band's one truly distinctive trait. Especially when your musical journey takes you through a universe of occult and esoteric elements. Acherontas, one of the darkest and most mystical bands to emerge from Greece, is undoubtedly one of the rare acts capable of achieving this. Having begun their ritual in 1996 as Worship and later as Stutthof, before continuing under the name Acherontas from 2007 onward, the band now carries a full 30 years of musical and spiritual accumulation. Naturally, such a body of work had to be commemorated by crowning it with a flawless EP. And so "For the Blood of Tiamat Praxis I: XXX Years Anniversary of Magick and Metamorphosis" emerges at precisely the point where it can be regarded as a distillation of this musical ritualistic legacy.

As with all of the band's other albums and works, the EP has been conceived, constructed, and executed with complete conceptual unity. It possesses a characteristic sound that will never feel out of place to those who have followed the band for years and are familiar with its style. The 25-minute EP contains four new tracks. I want to discuss them individually, because I believe each piece of this ritual deserves to be given its due with at least as much care as Acherontas itself has put into it.

Acherontas opens the ritual with "Crowned in the Higher Self" in a remarkably harsh and direct fashion. The choice of track is highly significant, particularly in the way it addresses the concept of becoming the sovereign of one's own spirituality and consciousness, one of the initial stages found in esotericism. Personally, I cannot think of a better way to begin. The fact that the track opens musically with direct blast beats fits the concept incredibly well while also transmitting the EP's energy to you from the very first seconds.

My personal favorite on the EP, "Abyssic Rite of Self-Deification", is a track I genuinely believe the band's fans will particularly enjoy, with its striking guitar riffs. It is, in my opinion, a pitch-perfect black metal piece, especially with Acherontas' epic vocalist V.P. Adept making his presence felt. I am certain we will be seeing this track very frequently on playlists once the EP is released.

The third track and the prelude to the ritual's conclusion, "For the Blood of Tiamat", is a lament for the band's esoteric roots. The Tiamat theme had already been one of the band's most prominent characteristics throughout its earlier periods, appearing with considerable intensity; therefore, it was no surprise that they chose to close with this theme, and the result is profoundly striking. The track's melodic structure and shifting texture genuinely enhance the listening experience. At the same time, moments that could be described as somewhat theatrical pull you directly into the ritual.

And we seal the ritual with the fourth track, "Ex Tenebris ad Lucem, Ex Lucem ad Abyssum", a calm yet deeply resonant outro. Following the blast-beat-driven opening of the first track, this tranquil ending almost seems to remind us that the cycle has been completed.

As always, Acherontas' latest ritual makes us question ourselves, our identity, our existence, the universe, and what lies beyond it. One of the best and most carefully crafted works of the year, this EP is certainly a special release you should acquire as soon as it comes out on October 30.
