ALBUM REVIEW
CALLOUS MASTER – Callous Master
Occult atmosphere, raw black metal, limited songwriting.

Bringing together musicians from different corners of Ireland’s underground black metal scene, CALLOUS MASTER follow their 2023 demo with a self-titled debut. Released through Invictus Productions, "Callous Master" draws on old-school touchstones such as Bathory and MASTER’S HAMMER while incorporating a more contemporary take on the genre exemplified by NEGATIVE PLANE. Occult philosophy is just as integral to the record as its musical foundations. The teachings of Austin Osman Spare and the ideas surrounding Zos Kia Cultus inform the lyrical world, reinforcing the ritualistic and unsettling character of the music.
The opening title track is one of the clearest expressions of this approach. Its stripped-down riffing, rough-edged guitar tone and reverberant vocals bring it closer to the raw directness of primitive black metal than to elaborate composition. What matters here is less technical variety than the sinister atmosphere generated by repetition and an unpolished sonic texture. This approach establishes CALLOUS MASTER’s retro-minded aesthetic, drawing clear parallels with the early recordings of TÖRR and Bathory. Turning these familiar reference points into a distinctive compositional language, however, proves less successful across the album as a whole.

The thrash-inflected momentum of "Stealing the Fire From Heaven" is one of the elements that breaks up the monotony. Its rhythmic vitality provides a different sense of drive compared to the album’s slower, more straightforward passages. "Anathema of Zos (A Sermon to Active Sigils)", meanwhile, stands out for its more intricate structure. Tempo changes and certain transitions reminiscent of early Mercyful Fate demonstrate that the band are not content to rely solely on simple riff cycles. Even so, these structural shifts do not always develop into compelling melodic ideas or memorable hooks. The songs establish their own atmospheres, but offer fewer compositional details capable of making those atmospheres linger after the music stops.
The album’s most intriguing departure comes with "The Crossing of Samsara". A passage edging into noise ventures beyond the familiar guitar and rhythmic framework, creating unease through a different sonic approach. While this choice strengthens the connection between the occult themes and the music’s atmosphere, it is difficult to argue that the experimental detour fundamentally transforms the album’s overall character. CALLOUS MASTER remain largely within the boundaries of established black metal traditions, with their more unconventional elements serving as brief expansions of that framework.
At around 36 minutes, the six tracks avoid overstaying their welcome. The raw guitar tone and restrained use of reverb suit the compositions’ dark character, while the rough-edged production aligns with the band’s old-school orientation. On the other hand, the succession of similar textures and relatively straightforward riffs occasionally blurs the distinctions between individual tracks. The line between primitivism and underdeveloped songwriting becomes important here: the former defines CALLOUS MASTER’s aesthetic, while the latter limits its impact.
"Callous Master" is a debut that clearly demonstrates its allegiance to early black metal and the occult tradition, yet has not quite succeeded in transforming that heritage into a musical identity of its own. The influence of Bathory, MASTER’S HAMMER and NEGATIVE PLANE is unmistakable, but an affinity for the genre’s past is not enough, on its own, to produce memorable songs. CALLOUS MASTER have room to develop, but realising that potential will require more distinctive compositional ideas that go beyond riffs serving primarily to sustain the atmosphere. For now, this is a debut that should satisfy those drawn to the dark textures of old-school black metal, but still needs more to secure a lasting place in the genre’s vast underground catalogue.
