ALBUM REVIEW
IN OBSCURITY REVEALED – Caustic Maelstrom
Dark, uncompromising and destructive old-school death metal.

Mexican death metal band IN OBSCURITY REVEALED continue their march through lands ruled by darkness and death with their second full-length, Caustic Maelstrom. Arriving seven years after their debut, Glorious Impurity, the album shows that the band have made no changes to their musical course, instead choosing to venture even deeper into their own dark world. Formed in Mexico City in 2014, IN OBSCURITY REVEALED have a clear purpose: to play death metal. And not the kind that winks at current trends or scrambles to push the genre's boundaries, but a rooted, uncompromising and downright merciless approach.
Caustic Maelstrom draws primarily from the dark legacy of early Morbid Angel, Necrovore and Incantation. At the same time, the album's overall character embraces the diabolical riffing and aggression familiar to fans of Morbid Angel, Deicide and Immolation. There's also a suffocating atmosphere here that could appeal to listeners of Dead Congregation and Grave Miasma. The darkness is further intensified by Black Metal elements, adding to the album's unsettling character. The result is more than just fast and aggressive death metal; it's a destructive ordeal that keeps the listener under constant pressure, spreading darkness into every corner of the music.
One of my favourite aspects of the album is the way it combines this savage character with strong production. As you know, in extreme metal, making everything sound like a muddy mess is sometimes mistaken for achieving a raw, abrasive sound. Here, however, the approach preserves that crushing atmosphere without sacrificing the power or detail of the instruments. The aggression of the guitars, the driving momentum of the drums and the dark atmosphere complement one another. The production neither dulls the album's savagery nor obscures its musical details. In short, everything sits exactly where it should in this dark maelstrom.
There's little point in looking for a major transformation in the band's musical approach or ideas that haven't been heard before. Rather than creating a new language for death metal, IN OBSCURITY REVEALED prefer to carry on with the old-school sound we love, shaped by their own dark character. In my view, the real question isn't whether they can compete in the originality stakes, but how convincingly they can bring their chosen musical direction to life. Caustic Maelstrom delivers precisely on that front. Its sheer sense of destruction, uncompromising approach and dark atmosphere make the band's commitment to the genre's traditions unmistakable.
Having previously released material through Blood Harvest Records, the band have moved to Mexico's Personal Records for this album. The fact that they still haven't reached a much wider audience after more than a decade of musical activity is also worth considering. In my view, it's difficult to attribute this directly to the quality of their music. Countless albums come out of the underground metal scene every week, and even quality releases can easily get lost in the sheer volume. IN OBSCURITY REVEALED may well be one of the bands that have yet to receive the recognition they deserve amid all this noise. Caustic Maelstrom, however, is a strong statement of the band's musical quality and dedication to what they do.
Ultimately, IN OBSCURITY REVEALED stay the course on their second album. They have no interest in sanding down their rough edges in the name of modernisation or changing their musical identity just to stand out. For anyone looking for dark, aggressive and punishing death metal, Caustic Maelstrom is well worth exploring, particularly for those who appreciate the atmospheric weight of bands like Dead Congregation and Grave Miasma. They may not be reinventing the genre, but the execution and sheer sense of destruction they deliver are enough to understand why they do this.
Death is real, darkness is eternal. And IN OBSCURITY REVEALED are still playing death metal.
