Slaughtercult - Devoured By Perversion

Slaughtercult’s emergence from Sydney’s underground scene in 2022 and their transformation into one of the more notable new names in Australian brutal death metal within just a few years makes "Devoured By Perversion" significant as more than merely a sophomore album; it also offers a clear indication of how consciously the band can exploit the boundaries of its musical language. Following 2023’s "Meat Head", the album remains deeply faithful to the fundamental aesthetic that took shape around the genre in the 1990s. Yet that allegiance is reinforced by rhythmic and structural details that prevent the songs from becoming interchangeable.

The album’s most defining quality, spread across 11 tracks and roughly 31 minutes, is that it never allows the physical weight of brutal death metal to take precedence over composition. While the guitars establish a thick, low-end body, the drums do more than generate speed through blast beats; they shape the movement of the songs by continually altering the rhythmic character of the riffs. As a result, "Birthing Ceremony" may launch straight into an aggressive attack, but its impact is not built solely on tempo. The combination of the heavy strikes of palm-muted chords and accelerating tremolo passages with the drums makes the guitars and percussion function not as separate layers, but as parts of the same rhythmic organism. The album makes it clear from its very first track that it is moving beyond the familiar brutal death metal formula of "riff plus blast beat."

"Repulsed By Your Haggard Appearance" continues this approach through a structure that moves between groove and grindcore. The heavier transitions that follow the faster sections are not simply there to lower the tempo; they rebuild the track’s tension. This fast-versus-slow contrast becomes an important compositional tool throughout the album. "Pools Of Bile" moves from a slower introduction into a structure that puts the vocals further forward, while "Intravenous Acuphagia" holds onto its steady, feral central riff for an extended stretch before making an unexpected turn toward the end. Repetition therefore creates a stronger sense of change within the songs rather than simply producing monotony.

The slam influence becomes particularly pronounced on tracks such as "Perverse Bestial Lactation" and "Menstrual Marinade". The former, featuring guest vocals from Marvin Ruiz, leans into half-time sections and abrupt transitions, while the guitars shifting between speed and heavy strikes give the track a constantly changing physical weight. Its reverb-soaked solo also provides a brief contrast within that intensity. "Menstrual Marinade", meanwhile, combines broad guitar chords with tight palm-muted passages through a more mid-tempo approach. Elfi Davis’s vocals likewise integrate themselves into the rhythmic structure of the instrumentation rather than competing with it. This kind of relationship between vocals and instrumentation, which appears at several points across the album, is one of the key reasons the band can display its musicianship without turning it into a showy technical exhibition.

The role of the drums is particularly noteworthy here. On "Horrible Cunt", the use of offbeats and precise timing does more than add speed to the weight generated by the guitars; it changes the track’s rhythmic character. Similarly, "Strong Poison" places high-tempo percussion patterns alongside extremely heavy chugs in the latter part of the album, widening the distance between those two extremes. The track demonstrates well why technical proficiency in the band’s music does not automatically translate into complexity. Here, technicality comes not from using as many notes or structural variations as possible, but from making two different rhythmic feels work within the same composition without allowing either to overwhelm the other.

The vocals generally serve to complement the music’s intensity rather than dominate it. Low guttural tones and more aggressive passages run parallel to the rhythmic density created by the guitars and drums. On tracks such as "Pools Of Bile" and "Perverse Bestial Lactation", the rhythmic placement of the vocals helps define their character, while in sections such as "Birthing Ceremony" and "Repulsed By Your Haggard Appearance", the instrumental structure occasionally takes precedence over the vocals. This balance demonstrates that the three-piece does not build its sound around a single dominant element. Each instrument retains its own space without compromising the overall cohesion.

The album’s genre boundaries also become important here. "Devoured By Perversion" does not pursue the complex harmonic or progressive structures associated with technical death metal. Likewise, its grindcore influences never push the music into a completely chaotic form. Hardcore- and slam-derived grooves are incorporated into brutal death metal’s low-end riffing approach. As a result, the album’s variety comes less from any attempt to step outside the genre than from using the same relatively narrow musical vocabulary in different combinations. "Steeped In Fungal Discharge" is a good example: the transitions between mid-tempo grooves and high-speed sections give the track a memorable structure without taking it away from the fundamental character of brutal death metal.

One of the band’s greatest advantages lies in its ability to keep the songs distinguishable while working with material that is extremely familiar within the genre. The legacy of 1990s brutal death metal has created a clearly defined aesthetic built around low-tuned guitars, guttural vocals, blast beats, slam sections and gore-focused song titles. "Devoured By Perversion" does not attempt to reinvent that aesthetic. Instead, it uses subtle differences in tempo, rhythm and riff density to establish the identities of individual songs. The sudden shifts in weight on "Strong Poison", the sustained central riff of "Intravenous Acuphagia", the mid-tempo approach of "Menstrual Marinade" and the slam-heavy transitions of "Perverse Bestial Lactation" all contribute to that differentiation.

Production also supports the physical character of the music at this point. Although the guitar tone carries a thick and pronounced distortion, the rhythmic movement of the riffs never becomes completely blurred. The drums keep the music from losing its direction, particularly during the faster sections, while the bass reinforces the low-end body created by the guitars. The result is that the intensity inherent to brutal death metal never collapses into an uncontrolled mass of sound. The album’s heaviness remains intelligible thanks to its arrangement and performance choices.

At the same time, this is precisely where the album’s greatest limitation emerges. "Devoured By Perversion" consciously employs the established formulas of the genre, and as a result, it does not open up an especially broad aesthetic space for listeners seeking novelty. Gore-themed song titles, low gutturals, blast beats, slam sections and extremely heavy guitars are all familiar components of brutal death metal. The band’s point of distinction lies not in abandoning these elements, but in using them with sufficient control within its songwriting. The album’s originality therefore comes not from a radical transformation of the genre, but from the disciplined rhythmic and structural execution of a familiar formula.

Album closer "Soft Foetal Malformation" is one of the most concentrated examples of this approach. Following the spoken-word opening, the simultaneous rise in energy from the guitars, drums and vocals pushes the physical weight established throughout the album to an even more intense level. The fact that the track remains cohesive despite containing so many elements at once clearly demonstrates the compositional control Slaughtercult has developed on its second album.

"Devoured By Perversion" is therefore more than simply a heavier second album from Slaughtercult. Following "Meat Head", it shows the band beginning to employ its brutal death metal vocabulary with a tighter approach to songwriting. It incorporates the speed of grindcore, the rhythmic weight of slam and the physical directness of hardcore into the fundamental structure of brutal death metal, without allowing any of them to overshadow the band’s identity. The album’s real value lies here: while remaining within the boundaries of an extremely familiar genre, it demonstrates sufficiently controlled and deliberate songwriting to preserve the individual rhythmic character of its tracks.

There is still considerable room for Slaughtercult to expand their musical language, but "Devoured By Perversion" shows that they do not need to abandon the foundations of the genre to do so. The record establishes itself as the second step from a band capable of taking brutal death metal’s old formulas beyond nostalgic repetition and reworking them within a contemporary scene, while giving song structure as much importance as sheer intensity.
