LUTHER Returns to Progressive Post-Hardcore with “Five of Cups”
Tarot Reveals The Shadows
Berlin-based LUTHER are moving away from the Nu-Metal and Deathcore influences of their previous work with their new single “Five of Cups,” unveiling a new sound that brings together elements of Progressive Post-Hardcore, Melodic Alternative Metal, and Emo. Production, mixing, and mastering for the track were handled by Enrico Tiberi, the current vocalist of THE OCEAN.
“Five of Cups” stands out not only for the shift in LUTHER’s musical direction but also for its narrative. The song’s lyrics are inspired by a trip to Naples taken by vocalist Leo Luther. What begins as a vacation takes an unexpected turn through mystical and folkloric experiences, including a prophetic tarot reading and a series of occult signs appearing one after another.
Leo Luther explains the story behind the track: “The lyrics tell the true story of a trip to Naples, where a vacation turns into an unexpected journey through mystical and folkloric experiences, including a prophetic tarot reading and a series of occult signs. These encounters trigger a harsh but inescapable realization: sometimes in life, no one is ever completely on your side, and many of those around you may only be there to pick at the remains.”
The new single follows the band’s 2025 debut track “Next Time Send a Killer” and the Long Branch Records release “Giving The People What They Want.” Following their debut single, LUTHER performed support shows for Escuela Grind, Silly Goose, PREDATORY VOID, and URNE. The track’s organic traction across social media and streaming platforms also brought support from content creators including Kasey Karlsen, Dominik Artefex, and Moo Smith, as well as US radio airplay via Liquid Metal/SiriusXM.
“Five of Cups” marks a clear shift in direction compared to the band’s previous work. The Nu-Metal and Deathcore influences that stood out on their previous single have given way to an approach built around Progressive Post-Hardcore and Melodic Alternative Metal, with touches of Emo. LUTHER’s current musical reference points include LOATHE, KNOCKED LOOSE, POPPY, KORN, KIM DRACULA, and THE MARS VOLTA.
With Enrico Tiberi, the current vocalist of THE OCEAN, overseeing the track’s production, “Five of Cups” arrives just ahead of LUTHER’s busy run of live appearances.
After performing at Hamburg’s Local Core Festival on September 5, the band will head to Canada for the Envol et Macadam Festival in Quebec City on September 10–12, where they will share the stage with BAD RELIGION and HATEBREED. LUTHER are also scheduled to perform in Hamburg at Reeperbahn Festival on September 18 and at the Female Fronted Is Not a Genre Festival in Berlin on October 26.
As part of Reeperbahn Festival, LUTHER will perform at the BETTY stage on Friday, September 18, at 5:20 p.m., within the “Spotlight on: Heavy Reeperbahn” and MoreCore.de Showcase program.
Work continues on the band’s highly anticipated debut studio album, which is said to be shaped by influences including KORN, LOATHE, GRAYHAVEN, THE MARS VOLTA, and SYSTEM OF A DOWN. Further details, including the album’s release date, are expected to be announced at a later date.
