VOID SECTOR ZERO, bringing together musicians with ties to NECROPHAGIST, REVOCATION and DECREPIT BIRTH, have released their new single, ‘Extraterrestrial Disassembly’. Featuring guest vocals from ALKALOID frontman Morean, the track is the second advance single from the band’s debut album, “Dead Space Enigma”, due out on December 11 via Season of Mist.

Formed by guitarist Christian Muenzner (NECROPHAGIST, formerly OBSCURA and ALKALOID), drummer Gabe Seeber (DECREPIT BIRTH, ABIGAIL WILLIAMS, CARACH ANGREN) and vocalist/bassist Alex Weber (REVOCATION, MALIGNANCY, EXIST), the project combines a progressive thrash metal approach with technical death metal, neoclassical metal, US power metal and jazz/fusion influences. The three musicians first met while playing together on OBSCURA’s A Valediction world tour in 2022.

‘Extraterrestrial Disassembly’ unfolds as a cosmic horror narrative built around the idea of extracting DMT from a dead body. Driven by Muenzner’s technical guitar soloing and Seeber’s high-speed drumming, the track takes on a distinct character with Morean’s vocals. Musically, the band brings together complex time signatures and progressive riffs, clean-sung choruses, and influences from classic heavy metal and hard rock.

Muenzner explains the song’s structure and inspirations:

“‘Extraterrestrial Disassembly’ is about a DMT trip that goes horribly wrong. Although it’s the shortest track on Dead Space Enigma, it features plenty of eerie time-signature riffs, progressive riffs, a clean-sung chorus, and nods to hard rock and classic metal bands such as CORONER, MERCYFUL FATE, ANNIHILATOR, HELSTAR and HOLY MOSES.”

Although “Dead Space Enigma” does not follow a single overarching concept, it explores science fiction and cosmic horror through different tracks. The album’s first single, ‘Vortex Divinium’, draws inspiration from the warped world of Bob Lazar, known for his UFO claims, while ‘Cybernetic Infantry’ features Morean on vocals once again. ‘Ammutseba’, meanwhile, takes its cues from the mythology created by H. P. Lovecraft.

Christian Muenzner says the band set out to combine late-1980s technical thrash metal with the technical death metal sound of the early 1990s. Although VOID SECTOR ZERO draws on older influences, he explains, the project is not about imitating the past. Instead, the band aims to bring classic and modern elements together while exploring a broader musical range in terms of rhythm and harmony.

Produced by Christian Muenzner, Pere Revert and Alex Weber, the album’s guitars and synthesizers were recorded at Shredquarter Studios in Mexico City, while bass and vocals were tracked at Weber’s home studio. The drums were recorded at Mayhemeness Recording Studio in Sacramento. Pere Revert handled mixing and mastering at SONNOS in Andorra. The artwork is by Timon Kokott, while Jesus Hernandez was responsible for the photography and directed the video for ‘Extraterrestrial Disassembly’.

“Dead Space Enigma” will be released on December 11 via Season of Mist on CD Digipak and 12-inch gatefold vinyl, available in different colour variants. Pre-orders and digital pre-saves are available here.
