SAISEIGA -黒舞台 (Black Stage)
Dark, heavy, controlled and progressive groove metal.
SAISEIGA's "黒舞台" (Black Stage) EP is significant not only because it directly continues the dark world established with "THE BLACK HOLE", but also because it documents a distinct shift in the band's approach to songwriting. Released independently in May 2026, the three-track EP retains the atmosphere of the same period across "BIAS", "SYSTEM" and "Behind The Scenes", while placing greater emphasis on arrangement and structure than on immediate melodic accessibility.
This approach is particularly evident in the shared character of the three tracks. "BIAS" and "SYSTEM" move forward on sharper riffs, while "Behind The Scenes" develops its dramatic structure through broader layers of guitar and Wakkun's solo. The darkness of the "THE BLACK HOLE" era also goes beyond being a purely abstract atmosphere in the lyrics: "SYSTEM" addresses social manipulation and the shaping of the individual, "BIAS" turns toward jealousy and identity conflict, while "Behind The Scenes" gives form to feelings of alienation and being left behind. As a result, the EP's darkness takes on a more cohesive character, with its musical heaviness and lyrical world reinforcing one another.
SAISEIGA's groove metal foundation remains clearly present, but the centre of gravity is not sheer impact. Repetition in the riffs and rhythmic movement are used less to create immediately graspable melodic hooks than to establish the internal architecture of the songs. For that reason, "黒舞台" may initially feel somewhat distant to listeners looking for the band's more direct side. As the arrangements unfold, however, the relationship between the tracks becomes increasingly meaningful. The fact that "BIAS", "SYSTEM" and "Behind The Scenes" can feel like a single extended section when considered in sequence shows that the EP creates a narrative of its own despite its short running time.
The change in the band's previous working method is also important here. During the "THE BLACK HOLE" and "黒舞台" period, SAISEIGA worked with more developed demos and predetermined concepts, allowing them to shape the music's atmosphere in a more controlled way. Katsuki's prominent role in songwriting and arrangement, Tohko's approach to the drums and Wakkun's solos each complete a different part of this structure. Regan, meanwhile, does more than provide heaviness as she moves between powerful growls and clean vocals; she keeps the unease carried by the lyrics at the centre of the songs.
This is also where SAISEIGA's most compelling quality emerges. Although there are other examples on Japan's modern metal scene that combine groove, melodic vocals and heavy guitars, "黒舞台" makes it difficult to define the band's identity solely through those components. The EP's move toward more progressive arrangements brings the music's internal architecture to the forefront, at the expense of a certain degree of immediately accessible melody. More importantly, this choice is not employed for the sake of showing off, but to preserve the continuity of the world that began with "THE BLACK HOLE".
Ultimately, "黒舞台" (Black Stage) is a short but distinctive release that brings out SAISEIGA's heavier and more controlled side. The EP's greatest strength is not that it invents a new genre, but that it brings together its groove metal foundations, darker atmosphere and increasingly intricate arrangements within a single aesthetic framework. It is therefore no coincidence that "Behind The Scenes" genuinely feels like a conclusion. With "黒舞台", SAISEIGA clearly lays out how the band intends to continue its career in the wake of "THE BLACK HOLE".
