ALBUM REVIEW
TEMPLE OF DREAD - Dreadspawn Dominion
Dark Death Legacy

TEMPLE OF DREAD have quickly established themselves as one of the notable names in Germany’s Old School Death Metal scene, gaining attention not only for their consistent output but also for their steadily growing reputation. Founded by Markus Bünnemeyer on the island of Spiekeroog in 2017, the band has expanded the legacy of classic death metal with dark atmospheres, powerful riff writing, and an increasingly cinematic approach to their storytelling. With their sixth studio album, “Dreadspawn Dominion”, the band remains loyal to its roots while taking the heavier and more layered direction they have developed in recent years to a new level.
With their sixth album “Dreadspawn Dominion”, TEMPLE OF DREAD preserve their Old School Death Metal foundations while clearly pushing the darker and more cinematic side of their sound further than before. The album is still built around razor-sharp guitar riffs, aggressive drumming, and the legacy of the classic Swedish and Florida death metal schools; however, the band’s real progression lies in the way they shape this framework not merely through speed and brutality, but through weight, atmosphere, and compositional balance.
The opening track ‘Wings Of Immortality’ creates a brief transitional space before the album’s main attack with its acoustic textures and calm structure evoking the dark atmosphere of the ancient world. Following this introduction, ‘Dreadspawn Dominion’ quickly reveals the band’s defining characteristics. The song begins with thrash-influenced guitar patterns and a more controlled rhythmic approach before transforming into a classic Death Metal assault within moments. Markus Bünnemeyer’s riff writing here is not built solely around aggression; melodic turns, sudden tempo shifts, and atmospheric transitions prevent the track from moving in a single direction. Jens Finger’s vocals move between deep, almost spoken dark tones and harsh screams, reinforcing the physical weight of the music.

One of the strongest aspects of “Dreadspawn Dominion” is the way TEMPLE OF DREAD now use changes in pace not merely to create dynamics, but as a fundamental part of their song structures. ‘Born To Rot’ is a clear example of this approach. The track combines fast death metal sections, more dragging rhythmic passages, and D-beat influenced transitions. However, this diversity occasionally causes the compositional focus to become slightly blurred; particularly in sections where multiple ideas are introduced one after another, the song’s central direction can momentarily lose clarity. Despite this, the strong guitar work and memorable vocal sections keep the track firmly grounded.
One of the album’s strongest compositions, ‘Hybrid Horde Eternal’, demonstrates how the band’s expanded lineup has influenced their sound. Daniel Maurer’s addition as a second guitarist and the denser rhythmic foundation created by Andi Bauer’s bass significantly broaden TEMPLE OF DREAD’s sonic range. The second guitar is not simply used to create a thicker tone; it adds harmonic layers and allows the riffs to sound fuller. This approach becomes especially apparent in the song’s slower, doom-influenced passages. Here, the band consciously uses the contrast between speed and heaviness; the slower sections become structural tools that increase the impact of the faster moments.
This approach becomes even more apparent on ‘Death March’. The song combines the mechanical movement created by double bass drumming with heavy mid-tempo marches. Jörg Uken’s drumming is not merely an element that determines the pace; it functions as an active force carrying the weight of the riffs. Uken’s production at Soundlodge Tonstudio also maintains this balance. The guitars sound harsh and sharp, while the drums retain a natural sense of impact. Unlike the overly sterile approach often found in modern extreme metal production, the album still preserves the feeling of actual musicians playing in a room.
The cinematic side TEMPLE OF DREAD have developed throughout their recent releases is one of the key elements of “Dreadspawn Dominion”. However, the band does not use it merely as atmospheric background; on tracks such as ‘Blood Pyre’ and ‘Scorched By Cosmic Fire’, this approach directly influences the riff arrangements. ‘Blood Pyre’ expands classic death metal aggression with more melodic guitar lines and unexpected harmonic movements. These melodies do not function merely as decoration; they become one of the defining elements of the song’s identity. In contrast, ‘Scorched By Cosmic Fire’ represents the album’s more epic side by moving between brief black metal-inspired attacks and more grandiose melodic passages.
At this point, the band’s ancient mythology-based approach also works in harmony with the music itself. The narrative centered around Charon and Hades, continued through the lyrics of Frank “Doc” Albers, is not used merely as a visual concept. The album’s crushing riffs, dark harmonies, and theatrical transitions support this thematic world. Paolo Girardi’s artwork follows the same direction, remaining within the traditions of classic extreme metal aesthetics while visually completing the album’s mythological and death-focused atmosphere. Here, the visual identity is not a separate decoration detached from the music, but an extension of the world the band has created.
‘Rites Of Blasphemy’ highlights the band’s earlier death metal character as one of the album’s more direct and compact attacks. In contrast, ‘Artisan Of Oblivion’ showcases the group’s technical abilities through detailed guitar arrangements and more pronounced melodic touches. However, TEMPLE OF DREAD’s strength lies in the fact that these technical elements are never used purely for display. The riffs feel written not to create complexity for its own sake, but to expand the movement and possibilities of the songs.
The closing track ‘Infernal Eternity’ once again brings the band’s atmospheric side to the forefront. With its longer structure and slower-moving sections, it completes the album’s earlier aggression from a different perspective. Here, TEMPLE OF DREAD choose tension over speed; the song’s impact does not come from constantly increasing intensity, but from maintaining its weight throughout its progression.
“Dreadspawn Dominion” is a record that allows TEMPLE OF DREAD to explore a wider range within the boundaries of Old School Death Metal without abandoning those foundations. The album combines the genre’s classic riffing approach with modern production possibilities and more cinematic arrangements. The new lineup does not only provide the music with additional physical force; it also expands the band’s compositional options. However, this expansion never overshadows the group’s core identity.
Rather than being an extreme metal record designed for immediate consumption, this is an album that reveals more layers when approached with attention to riff transitions, rhythmic shifts, and atmospheric details. TEMPLE OF DREAD are not reinventing the traditions of the genre; instead, they have reached a point where they demonstrate that Old School Death Metal still has room for development while further solidifying their own identity. “Dreadspawn Dominion” stands as an important chapter in the band’s discography, presenting a heavier, more balanced, and more comprehensive refinement of the foundations they have built over the years.
